Postcards sent by mail from Rome to Ricardo (Richard) Mayer, a prisoner of Ferramonti di Tarsia Concentration Camp near Cosenza in south Italy. July 1943 – two months before the release of the camp. The postcards are stamped with the Rome postmark. The postcards are identical in content, one is handwritten in Italian; the other is a copy typewritten in German. Both postcards have a postage stamp with the figure of Mussolini and were sent on the same day. The sender writes about his condition in Rome and his plans to leave the city.
Ferramonti Concentration Camp was the largest among the 15 camps built by Mussolini in Italy in 1940. It differed from the German concentration camps since the conditions it offered were not so bad. The prisoners were allowed to receive packages and the attitude towards the Jews was tolerable. Most important, there were no transports of Jews to extermination camps in Poland. The camp was released on 4.9.1943, several days before Italy surrendered to the Allies.
Condition: Very Good.
