CHESTER A. ARTHUR
1829 - 1886) Twenty-first President of the United States who took office following the assassination of James Garfield. Manuscript L.S. as Collector of Customs in New York on official letterhead, 1p. small 4to., Sep. 16, 1876 to EDWARDS PIERREPONT (1817–1892), former U.S. Attorney General and then serving as U.S. Minister to England. In part: '…the package for Mrs. Colonel [Frederick Dent] Grant…was duly received and promptly forwarded to her at Long Branch. The amount of duty paid upon same is so insignificant as not to be worth mentioning…' Very slightly blurred, else very good. Arthur had raised funds for Grant's election, and in 1871, President Grant had appointed Arthur to his prominent position as Collector – where he earned more than the president himself.
