TOGO HEIHACHIRO
TOGO HEIHACHIRO
(1848 - 1934) Imperial Japanese Naval Admiral and one of Japan's greatest naval heroes. As Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet during the Russo-Japanese War, he successfully confined the Russian Pacific Fleet to Port Arthur before winning a decisive victory over a relieving fleet at Tsushima. From 1914 to 1924, Togo was put in charge of the education of Crown Prince Hirohito, the future Showa Emperor throughout World War II. Rare S.P., 8.25 x 11.25 in. sepia, a full-body image of Togo in uniform, wearing his many decorations and holding an ornamental sword in each hand, signed boldly in black ink along the left side in Japanese kanji. Two spots of staining at top and bottom margins, signature and image largely unaffected. Very good condition. Sold with an original 10.5" x 8" photograph of the battleship MIKANA, Togo's flagship during the Russo-Japanese war, and an untranslated 4.5 x 2 in. card, apparently a pass to board the vessel.
