'PLAN OF THE BATTLE OF OUDENARD', OWNED BY GEN. CLARENCE R. HUEBNER
Rare engraved military map: 'Plan of the Battle of Oudenard, fought July 11th 1708', 18 x 15.25 in., engraved by renowned British engraver JAMES BASIRE for Paul de Rapin's 'History of England' in 1743. The map shows the topography, landmarks, and infrastructure of the city, as well as the positions of the military detachments of both French and Grand Alliance forces, with a decorative explanation cartouche at bottom left. The Battle of Oudenarde was a major engagement of the War of the Spanish Succession, resulting in a great victory for the Grand Alliance and ensured the fall of various French territories. Trimmed at bottom with ragged edges, notable folds and creases, just good condition. Sold with a second engraving: 'Plan de la Ville d'Huningue', 7.5 x 5.5 in., showing the city Huningue along the Rhine River, which often switched between French and Austrian control throughout the Thirty Years War, finally becoming French in 1648. Vertical fold, else fine. These maps were uniquely owned by CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888 - 1972), the American general who took command of the 1st Infantry Division, popularly known as the 'Big Red One', in early August of 1943. He commanded the division during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, where it was the first force to face the Germans on Omaha Beach, and he joined his men on the beach the same day. Following the German surrender, Huebner served as the Chief of Staff for all American forces in Europe, and in 1949 was named the final military governor of the American occupation zone in Germany. This lot originates from a direct linear descendant, and will be accompanied by our letter of provenance.
