“Chacham Tzvi” responsa (Part 1), first edition (Amsterdam 1712). Copy given by the author to Rabbi Habib Toledano, with signatures and handwritten glosses. An unknown historic gem!
Title page notation in Mizrahi script: “ A gift sent from the Gaon, the author, our teacher Rabbi Tzvi Ashkenazi to the young man in his service of Hashem, the undersigned Habib Toledano”.
The author, the Gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Ashkenazi, was one of the Torah giants of his generation and was known to correspond with the Sephardi rabbis of his time. Until now, however, there were no known direct connections with the rabbis of North Africa.
This copy was dedicated by the head of Diaspora Jewry, the Chacham Zvi, to one of the Torah giants of Meknes, Rabbi Habib, the son of Rabbi Chaim Toledano (1657-1716).
