Bronze incense shovel, comprising shovel and handle. Cleaned, good condition. 23.2 x 9.0 x 4.4 cm. Incense shovels were everyday objects used to remove ashes from altars both by Romans and Jews. Cf. Yadin, Y. Bar Kochba, Jerusalem, 1971, p. 94 for similar shovels found in Judaean Desert caves.
The Roman era 63 B.C.E. – 324 CE, “Pax Romana” is characterised by a material culture with similar characteristics from England in the West to Persia and beyond in the East.
