Bronze lamp with lug handle at rear, reflector in the shape of a leaf, cover in shape of flower with vertical element serving as handle; elongated nozzle. 12.4 x 6.3 x 5.4 cm. Tip of handle missing.
The Hellenistic period 332-63 B.C.E. starts with the conquests of Alexander the Great and continues with a syncretistic melding of Classical and Middle Eastern cultures. Symptomatic of the latter were steps taken by certain priestly families in Jerusalem to adopt pagan classical practices.
