Brafman, Yakov Aleksandrovich - writer on the European issue (circa 1825 - 1879). Born into a Jewish family; at the 34th year of his life he converted to Orthodoxy. In 1858, when Emperor Alexander II was passing through Minsk, he gave him a note about Jews, for which he was summoned to St. Petersburg; in 1866 he published in “Vilenskiy Vestnik” an article “The view of a Jew who converted to Orthodoxy on the reform of the way of life of the Jewish people in Russia”, where he proved the harm of Jewish self-government. In 1869, Brafman published the book "Jewish Brotherhoods" and then "The Book of the Kagala", which gave rise to extensive controversy in periodicals and withstood four editions (V., 1869; St. Petersburg, 1875, 1882, 1888). The Book of the Kagala consists of a translation of the original collection of decrees of the Minsk Jewish kagal of the late 18th century and a preface in which Brafman, without mentioning the abolition of the kagal in 1844, tries to prove that Jews constitute a state within a state. The Book of the Kagala and Brafman's later appearances in periodicals contributed to the growth of anti-Semitism in Russia. The last two, supplemented editions of the Book of the Kagala, as well as its translation into French, were published after the death of Brafman by his son Alexander, who, with his note on the Jewish question, influenced the works of the Committee on Jews in 1881-2. - See "Systematic Index of Literature on Jews" (St. Petersburg, 1893)
