Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv – Sermon before the Blowing of the Shofar on the War of the Time in His Handwriting
Aggadic sermon on the reasons for blowing the Shofar given by Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv on Rosh Ha'Shana at his Beit Midrash 'Tiferet Bachurim'.
The sermon opens with the reason the Sages gave for the blowing of the Shofar: "The voice of the Shofar should remind us the cry of war". The war that Rabbi Elyashiv is referring to is both the war against enemies from the outside, whose aim is to destroy the Jewish nation and against enemies from the inside – "the war of the Torah and the Sabbath against the reform…"
At the head of the letter, Rabbi Elyashiv wrote in pencil: "I have said on Rosh Ha'Shana 1966 [?]"
