Large Form of an Invitation to Selections of the Russian Army, Addressed to Jews, the Beginning of the 20th Century, Russian, Most Rare
Two forms of a personal invitation from the Russian government, which was meant to be sent to Jewish addressees. The forms invited them to come to the recruiting office on a date that was supposed to be filled manually in order to determine their age by their appearance, an act that was required due to confusion in the civil registry in Russia.
The invitation was printed in the first decade of the 20th century.
Background: At the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian army methodically recruited Jews for long-term service in the Russian army. About 5% of the Russian soldiers were Jews, that is, about 60,000 Hewish soldiers. The attitude towards the Jewish soldiers was humiliating and disrespectful – they were not promoted and were considered second rate soldiers, who received the most difficult and humiliating assignments.
The Jews tried to avoid the military service using every possible means (faking their age, paying bribes, escaping from region to region etc.)
Before us is an interesting historical document indicating the above mentioned forced enlistment.
