The new synagogue in Ostrow - Poland, located in the city center at 21 Rzzkowska Street, at the northern end of the Jewish Quarter. It was erected in 1724 with the support of the town owner, Jan Jersey Przhbandovsky as a small wooden structure with shingles. Decades later in 1860, a large and magnificent 'new' synagogue was erected in its place, designed by the renowned architect Moritz Landa, and with the assistance of various Jewish communities, and became one of the most impressive synagogue buildings in all of Europe. The synagogue became famous due to a catastrophic event that took place in October 1872, in the middle of Yom Kippur. During the day's prayers, the gas lamps went out. Women and children who were found in the "ezrat nasim", were frightened and began to flee. While fleeing, the staircase collapsed and 19 people were found dead. They were buried in a "mass grave" in the local Jewish cemetery. During World War II, the Nazis destroyed almost the entire Jewish Quarter, but the synagogue building was preserved thanks to the fact that it was used to store food and beverages.
