LETTER GROUPING TO BRITISH LIEUTENANT COLONEL HOWELL PRICE PAYNTER

Fine grouping of five letters from the end of the military career of British officer Lieutenant Colonel Howell Price Paynter, includes: A.L.S. from FITZROY SOMERSET, 1ST BARON RAGLAN (1788-1855), British officer who became Master-General of the Ordnance and commander of the British troops sent to the Crimea, 1p. folio, [n.p], Aug. 2, 1851, writing as secretary permitting Paynter to sell his Commission, adding: "..The Duke of Wellington regrets exceedingly that the severity of your wound should compel you to retire from the service." Slightly split at the center, else very good. WITH: A.L.S. from ARTHUR WELLESLEY, 1ST DUKE OF WELLINGTON (1769-1852), Anglo-Irish soldier and twice Prime Minister, one of the leading military and political figures of 19th-century Britain, who won a notable victory against Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Aug. 17, 1850, informing Paynter that the Queen had granted him the Order of the Bath. Fine. WITH: A.L.S. from British Whig politician BENJAMIN HAWES (1797-1862), 1p. folio, "War Office", March 15, 1852, forwarding the letter to Paynter's wife shortly after he his death. Slight damp stain at bottom, else very good. Sold with Paynter's handwritten letter, 1p. 4to., Agra, March 29, 1848, requesting a leave of absence; and another unidentified letter.
