In 1939 ca. 5,000 Jews lived in the town and in surrounding villages. Describes the German occupation in July 1941, followed by a pogrom carried out by Ukrainian police and peasants in which ca. 500 Jews were killed. In fall 1942 a ghetto was established, and ca. 4,000 Jews were deported, with the full cooperation of the Judenrat. Its head, Meyer Nirler, had a labor camp set up near Skalat so that he could save Judenrat members and take advantage of other Jews. Those who remained in the ghetto were massacred in April and June 1943 the labor camp was liquidated in July 1943. Only a few hundred Jews, including Weissbrod, survived in hiding or as partisans in the forests.
