Spanish Colonial Cup Hilt Rapier, 17th c.
Age of Sail, spanish colonial cup hilt rapier with engraved broad blade. Large straight double-edged blade with central shallow wide fuller. Etched to the blade with partially legible inscription reading to one side "Viva La, …" and the other a date with possible reference to a King Ferdinand VI. Each surrounded by scenes of crowns, scrolling, double-headed eagle, and other heraldic symbols. Solid cup hilt guard with heavy roped steel edge. Well marked to the ricasso at either side with hallmark stamps. Wide straight quillion with flared scalloped ends. D-shaped hand guard with matching decoration. Turned steel twisted wire grip. Oval carved pommel, hand peened. Size 46" L, blade 37 1/2" L
Spanish Colonial swords during the period of sail 1570-1860 would often have variations composed partially in the colonies or New World. This example with particularly large blade of wider form is likely an example of such manufacture.
