Joseph Pressmane (born Jozef Presman) was a painter and engraver belonging to the School of Paris. Joseph Pressmane studied at the School of Fine Arts in Lviv and Warsaw before embarking in 1925 for a great trip to Palestine. A personal exhibition is dedicated to him in Jerusalem in 1925. In 1927, he arrived at Paris where he wanted to see Cezanne. “It was much more to look at the works of others than to exhibit myself” he confirmed. Naturalized French, he worked at the Academie Ranson with Roger Bissiere and immersed himself in the French masters whom he went to see every Sunday at the Louvre. In 1932, he met Leopold Zborowski who bought several paintings from him. The 1930s was, however, a time of great precariousness which forced him to work as a house painter. Throughout the Second World War, hunted down by the Germans, Joseph Pressmane remained hidden in the cellars, cupboards and WCs of the Boulevard de Port-Royal, cheating physical and moral suffering by drawing and reading Plato. He resumed painting at the Liberation, participating in exhibitions until the early 1960s. Alongside his landscapes, still life, figures and portraits, we also know of his canvases representing scenes from Jewish folklore, whereby, ”preserving his identity as a Slavic Jew, he esembles Chagall and Mane-Katz”, and some lithographs, the latter published as part of his participation in the Salon of painters.
