All items of this auction that were given directly by the Rebbe were thoroughly checked by the auction house to determine who received them from the Rebbe. For most of them, we received additional evidence such as a photograph taken when the item was received and varied authenticity tests.

The recipients' names were obscured in most of the items, at the request of their owners, and will be revealed to the buyers. Be advised, further questions about the items should be directed to the auction house until 24 hours before the auction. Entering a bid is binding with all that that entails. Thank you.

Item Overview

Description:

Sefer Zecher Yehuda by the Maharil Batlan a Disciple of the Admor Hazaken - First Edition Berditchev 1889

Sefer Zecher Yehuda, "which is Shut Maharil Batlan on Dinim of the four parts of the Shulchan Aruch by the Gaon Rav... Rabbi Yehuda Leib Zalkind who was known as Reb Leib Batlan, who was Rav of Vilkomir and Denenburg..."

First edition at the Press of Rabbi Yaakov Sheftil, Berditchev

 - 1889. [1] VIII, 124; IV, 36 pp. In this copy, the leaf following the title page is missing. This leaf contains approbations by the rabbis of Berditchev, Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor and the Natziv of Volozhin. Old contemporary binding with a blemished and incomplete leather spine. Stains and minir blemishes. Good overall condition.

The author, the Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Leib Zalkind (the Maharil Batlan; ca 1778/1783 - 1858)  was an important disciple of the Admor Hazaken Baal HaTanya and a leading Chabadic Rav. Served as Rav of Vilkomir and Denenburg (Dvinsk). Author of Shut Zecher Yehuda.

Was known for his Chassidut and Prishut, thus his title "Batlan". Corresponded with the Admor the Tzemach Tzeddek, whith whom he studied in their youth. Some even state that he was the Rav of the Tzemach Tzeddek for a period of approx. four months. When the Tzemach Tzeddek founded a Kollel Avreichim in Dvinsk, the Maharil was appointed by him as the haed of the Kollel.
