Copy of the Papa Dayan Rabbi Moshe Yosef Hoffman: Minchat Chinuch Two Sections with Glosses - Lemberg, 1899
Sefer Minchat Chinuch, a comprehensive scholarly work on Taryag Mitzvot by the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Babad, Av Beit Din of Tornopol. The work is based on Sefer Hachinuch attributed to Rabbi Aharon Halevi, one of the Rishonim, and is printed around it.
Two sections of three with a separate title page for each. Second edition of the famed work yet the first in which the author's name appears on the title page - Lemberg, 1899. Separate title page for the third section. Originally, [1], 147; [1], 104, 5, [2] leaves. In this copy, three leaves at the end are missing, not with the text of the work.
At the beginning of section II-III: Hagahot Mishneh Lamelech by the Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Rosanis on Sefer hachinuch. At the end of section III, there are comments and glosses on the work by the author's son Rabbi Shimon Babad of Tornopol. Approbations (in section I) by the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Aharon Itinga of Lviv and by the author's sons.
Ancient binding, loose. Leather spine. Trimmed upper edges and headings. Tears, mainly to the last several leaves. Folds. Taping to the first title page. Good overall condition.
On the left upper edge of both title pages, a slightly blurred stamp in Hebrew and a foreign language: "משה יוסף האפמאן" - The Gaon Rabbi Moshe Yosef Hoffman, author of the Beer Mayim Chaim (1843-1928) was the son of Rabbi Michael, the author of Shut Maharam Mintz. He was a disciple of the Ketav Sofer and Rabbi Natan Binyamin Lieber of Pressburg. He received his Semicha by the Gaon Mahari Asad. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Moshe Weiss of Serdohel and served as Rav of Papa in 1882. In 1906 he immigrated to Jerusalem, where he continued to serve as Rav. He passed away without children. He published his father’s work, the Shut Maharam Mintz.
Inside the book, several short handwritten glosses - have not been studied.
