Handsome breastplate for a sefertorah, made of silver. Warsaw, 1912. Stamped.
Made by the Jewish artist J. Ehrlich, according to the dedication on the breastplate from 1912. The famous Jewish artist from Warsaw worked at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The breastplate is decorated with embossing work, cutting, engraving, and enamel. It has embossed and engraved decorations of plants and flowers; at the top are lions holding a crown, at the center is a gate, and at its sides are flowers—above the gate is a deer. The dedication: “For the Talalis synagogue,” “in memory of the woman Sarah bar Avraham Stanislevich, died 26th of Adar 1912.” The style of this breastplate was used for breastplates in Warsaw during the last half of the 19th century, and it is likely they copied from previous designs made in Ukraine. An earlier example of this type is in the Stiglitz collection. Signature of the artist, location, and quality of the silver. Weight: 848g. 27x31cm. Light defects, generally good condition.
