This time the meal begins with an entrée of Art Nouveau and Art Deco art and historical pieces.  The next course is rare Chanukiahs and both Jewish and Islamic Persian items. The main course is a generous portion of silver and Judaica.  We move on to Israeli military tags and pins.  Then we'll have a toast with some alcohol and wash it down with some fantastic Israeli street signs, Israeliana and numismatics.  For a sweet dessert, we have gold jewelry, collector pens and fine art. And for anyone who still has room, an after meal treat of Israeli vintage games and collectables.

Antique, rare Damascus amphora, donated by Elie Schalit to an event for Casa Shalom/The Institute for Murrano (Anusim) Studies. Mr. Schalit was personally invested and committed to Gloria Mound and her arduous and groundbreaking work for the institute. Full (and fascinating) story of provenance written below*. Amphora made of copper with bronze handles. Embossing, engraving and metal spinning. The words Ben Porat Yosef (in Hebrew) embossed over and over again. With images of animals, man, palm trees, tents etc. Measurements: 31cm height x 35cm width. Diameter at center: 20cm.

* This amphora was donated to Gloria Mound, of Casa Shalom (later called: The Institute for Marrano (Anusim) Studies) , by Elie Schalit of the Samson Trust of the Schalit Family. It was used in a raffle at a musical evening held at Casa Shalom to raise funds for the institute.

Before 1948, Mr. Schalit helped the American Oil Company to arrange a pipeline from Saudi Arabia to Israel through the Golan.  He succeeded in the project and was taken by plane to Damascus from where he would go to New York to meet the American engineers who put the project together.  When he arrived in Damascus, he had the "privilege" of being surrounded by Syrian soldiers and being a Palestinian Jew (born in Jerusalem), he was required to give information on his presence there. He requested to see the American Ambassador to help sort out the situation. He was surprised that the men who questioned him were not too aggressive but he had to spend severl days in their prison in the meantime.

Mr. Schalit asked to have someone from the community bring him kosher food.  The Jewish familes who maintained a kosher bakery (baklava being their specialty), sent him food and pastries.

After inquiries they decided to put Mr. Schalit under house arrest instead of prison but only after a couple of days said he could go. A car was sent by the American Oil Co. to take him to Beirut and then to Palestine.  On eof the members of the community accompanied him and brought him gifts, one of which being this Damascus amphora.

Mr. Schalit was very happy to donate the amphora to the Marrano Institute because he really believed in Gloria Mound's groundbreaking work regarding the Marranos/Anusim and deserved to be aided in any way possible.  Until his death in 2015, Mr. Schalit supported Gloria Mound and her institute tremendously.
