Important and interesting correspondence - Posna, 1856 - Rabbi Moshe Landsberg Rosh Av Beit Din of Posna and his father the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman (of the Beit Din of the Gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger) to the Tzaddik of Greiditz.

Lengthy letter, a halachic question, by the holy Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Posner Landsberg to Rabbi Eliyahu of Greiditz, following a question-letter by his son the Gaon Rabbi Moshe - Rosh Av Beit Din of Posna, pertaining to a dispute between Rabbi Shlomo Zalman and a Gaon named Rabbi Yosel.

These are two letters - by the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman and by Rabbi Moshe.

The background of the letters: Rabbi Moshe was honored on Shmini Atzeret with the Aliyat Shlishi. During the reading of the Torah, a change in the letter "ל" was observed and a dispute arose about whether to render the Sefer Torah kosher.

1. Rabbi Moshe's letter

In his fine letter from the eve of Rosh Chodesh Marcheshvan (1856), Rabbi Moshe introduces the question to his great father and shares his halachic opinion on it.

The letter is also a letter of greetings with many family matters and names of relatives, the Posner family being a most important and pedigreed family.

Handwritten and signed by him.

2. Rabbi Shlomo Zalman's letter.

This is a lengthy handwritten letter with dozens of lines; the beginning of the letter is missing.

In his letter to the Tzaddik of Greiditz, the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman discusses at length the Hilchot Stam, introduces Rabbi Yosel's opinion and his own reservations, writing: "והרבה פלפולים יש לי בדברי הפ"מ וקשה עלי הכתביה כי אין לי פנאי להעלות על הכתב כי טרוד אני בשיעורין אחרים ואי"ה בל"נ אקח פנאי להעלות על הכתב ולשלוח לרבינו שי'."

At the end of the letter: "..כ"ד תלמידו ועבדו והמצפה לתשובתו הרמה שלמה זלמן במו"ה יוסף זצ"ל מו"צ ושו"ב דפה."

The right margin is missing, with some of the text.

Handwritten and signed by him.

Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Posner-Landsberg (passed away in 1863) a disciple of his father the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Posna author of Yesod Yosef and a disciple of the Maharal Tzintz. For many years was a Dayan in Posna and was one of those who influenced the appointment of Rabbi Akiva Eiger as the Rav of the town. Printed from him is the book Toar Pnei Aryeh (Krohtshin, 1870).

His son, the Gaon Rabbi Moshe, was a Dayan of the Beit Din of Rabbi Akiva Eiger and eventually, Rosh Av Beit Din of Posna. Possibly his figure appears in the renowned picture of Rabbi Akiva Eiger walking with the Dayanim of the city alongside him. Passed away in 1884.
