Official Royal Wedding Invitation to the Marriage of Princess Maud of Wales and Prince Carl of Denmark, Later Queen Maud and King Haakon VII of Norway – Private Chapel, Buckingham Palace, 22 July 1896 - An important original official royal wedding invitation of 1896 to the marriage of Princess Maud of Wales (1869–1938) and Prince Carl of Denmark (1872–1957), the future Queen Maud and King Haakon VII of Norway. The invitation is surmounted by two gilt embossed crowned royal monograms, representing the bridal couple. Issued in the name of Queen Victoria, it opens: “The Lord Chamberlain is commanded by THE QUEEN to invite…” The name of the invited guest, “Mrs Hervey, ” has been entered in manuscript in the space provided. The invitation continues: “to the Ceremony of the Marriage of HER ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCESS MAUD OF WALES with HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCE CHARLES OF DENMARK.” The ceremony was to take place in The Private Chapel, Buckingham Palace, on Wednesday, 22 July 1896, at 12:30 o’clock. The lower portion additionally specifies the formal dress requirements: Gentlemen: Full Dress Coat with Trousers. Uniform. Ladies: Full Dress without Trains or Plumes. The reverse again bears the embossed royal monograms and requests that a response be addressed to: “The Lord Chamberlain, St. James’s Palace.” Princess Maud was the youngest daughter of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, and Alexandra, Princess of Wales. Her husband Prince Carl was a son of the future King Frederick VIII of Denmark. Nine years after their marriage, following the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway in 1905, Carl accepted the Norwegian throne and adopted the regnal name Haakon VII, while Maud became Queen of Norway. Their only son would later reign as King Olav V. (Of particular interest, this invitation forms an exceptional historical companion to the preceding wedding portrait of the couple, taken on the same day, 22 July 1896, and autograph-signed by both Maud and Carl - Lot 198). The invitee, “Mrs Hervey”, was most probably Mabel Elizabeth Hervey (née Lennox), wife of the Rev. Canon Frederick Alfred John Hervey, Domestic Chaplain to the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, and Chaplain-in-Ordinary to Queen Victoria. The Hervey family's close connection with the Royal Household strongly supports this identification.
