Lord Derby to Benjamin Disraeli – Private Cover to Grosvenor Gate, Initialled “D.” with Heraldic Wax Seal - A 19th-century private cover from Lord Derby to Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881), the British statesman and later Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The cover is addressed in manuscript to: “Right Honble. B. Disraeli M.P. Grosvenor Gate” and is prominently marked “Private.” At the lower left appears Lord Derby’s autograph initial “D.” The reverse retains a particularly attractive large original red wax seal bearing a heraldic device. The seal is substantially preserved, with the heraldic impression clearly visible. The relationship between Lord Derby and Benjamin Disraeli was one of the important political partnerships within the leadership of the 19th-century British Conservative Party. Disraeli served for many years as Derby’s principal political lieutenant, held office as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Derby’s governments, and later succeeded him as Prime Minister.
