Lord Derby to Benjamin Disraeli – Private Cover to Hughenden Manor, Signed “D.” with Wax Seal – 1864 - Historical 1864 private cover from Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby (1799–1869), to Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881), the British statesman and future Prime Minister, at his country residence, Hughenden Manor, High Wycombe. Hand-addressed: “Right Honble. B. Disraeli M.P. Hughenden Manor High Wycombe” At the lower left appears the sender’s manuscript “D.” – Derby. The reverse retains an impressive original red wax seal bearing a crowned heraldic device, together with original postal markings. Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, was one of the leading Conservative statesmen of Victorian Britain and served three times as Prime Minister. Disraeli was his principal political lieutenant, serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Derby’s governments, and ultimately succeeded him as Prime Minister in 1868. An interesting historical cover documenting a direct connection between Lord Derby and Benjamin Disraeli, two of the principal figures of 19th-century British Conservative politics, sent directly to Disraeli at his celebrated country residence, Hughenden Manor.
