John Arthur Roebuck – Signed Free Wrapper, 1837 Election – Reference to Charles Palmer - Signed Free Wrapper dated 1837 by John Arthur Roebuck (1802–1879), British lawyer, reformer and Member of Parliament, a prominent figure in 19th-century British politics and later a political associate of Benjamin Disraeli. The wrapper bears Roebuck’s signature “J. A. Roebuck”, a red crowned postal marking dated 1837, and retains an original red wax seal on the reverse. An old pencil annotation on the front appears to read “Election working for Palmer.” The inscription is particularly interesting in the context of the 1837 General Election at Bath, in which both John Arthur Roebuck and Charles Palmer were candidates. Roebuck stood as a Radical and Palmer as a Whig; both lost their seats to the two Conservative candidates. Roebuck returned to Parliament for Bath in 1841 and later represented Sheffield. In his later political career his views became increasingly conservative, and he also became associated politically with Benjamin Disraeli. An interesting piece of early Victorian British political and electoral history.
