Benjamin Disraeli – Original Photograph by Jabez Hughes, Taken at Osborne by Command of Queen Victoria, 1878 - Original photographic portrait of Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881), Earl of Beaconsfield, British statesman and author of Jewish ancestry who served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Photographed by royal photographer Cornelius Jabez Hughes (1819–1884) at Osborne, Queen Victoria’s residence on the Isle of Wight, on 22 July 1878, by command of the Queen. The mount is printed: “EARL OF BEACONSFIELD, K.G. – PHOTOGRAPHED AT OSBORNE BY COMMAND OF H.M. THE QUEEN – BY JABEZ HUGHES, RYDE.” The reverse bears the elaborate Royal Photographic Studio backmark of Jabez Hughes, identifying him as photographer to the Queen and the Prince of Wales. The same portrait is documented in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, where it is catalogued as a carbon photograph dated 22 July 1878.
