King George V – Autograph-Signed Royal Licence Authorising Vice-Admiral George Napier Tomlin to Wear the Egyptian Order of the Nile, Second Class, Conferred by King Fuad I of Egypt – St James’s, 3 August 1933 - An important official British royal document personally autograph-signed by King George V, granting Vice-Admiral George Napier Tomlin, C.M.G., M.V.O. Royal Licence and Authority to wear the Insignia of the Second Class of the Order of the Nile, conferred upon him by King Fuad I of Egypt. The document opens with the formal royal style: “George the Fifth, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas King, Defender of the Faith…” and identifies the recipient as: “Our Trusty and well beloved George Napier Tomlin, Esquire, Vice-Admiral in Our Navy, Companion of Our Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Member of Our Victorian Order.” It records that His Majesty the King of Egypt had conferred upon Tomlin the Insignia of the Second Class of the Order of the Nile on the occasion of his retirement from the service of the Egyptian Government. King George V accordingly grants Tomlin Royal Licence and Authority to wear the insignia and enjoy the rights and privileges belonging thereto, while expressly stating that the permission does not confer any British style, appellation, rank, precedence or privilege appertaining to a Knight Bachelor. Issued at the Court at Saint James’s on 3 August 1933, in the twenty-fourth year of George V’s reign. Prominently displayed at the head of the document is the original autograph signature of King George V: “George R.I.” beside an impressive blue royal seal. The document additionally bears revenue stamps, official embossed seals and a further authorised signature beneath “By His Majesty’s Command.” The reverse bears the official identification: “Vice-Admiral George Napier Tomlin, C.M.G., M.V.O. – Licence to wear the Insignia of the Second Class of the Order of the Nile.” George Napier Tomlin (1875–1947) was a distinguished senior officer of the Royal Navy who rose to the rank of Vice-Admiral. His remarkable career included service aboard the vessel carrying King George V and Queen Mary to India for the 1911 Delhi Durbar, for which he received the MVO; First World War service; command of an Allied naval squadron in the Black Sea following the Armistice; command of HMS Canada; assistance in establishing a Naval War College for the Chilean Navy; and, from 1927 to 1934, service with the Egyptian Government with the rank of Admiral and the title of Pasha. The Second Class of the Order of the Nile referred to in the present document was conferred upon him by King Fuad I of Egypt on the occasion of his retirement from Egyptian Government service. A particularly interesting royal and naval document combining the original autograph of King George V, a senior Royal Navy Vice-Admiral, King Fuad I of Egypt and the Egyptian Order of the Nile.
