“A Nation Mourns the Loss” – Queen Victoria Mourning the Death of Prince Albert, Surrounded by Portraits of Their Children – Royal Memorial Carte-de-Visite – 1860s - An unusual nineteenth-century royal memorial Carte-de-Visite (CDV) produced in the aftermath of the death of Prince Albert (1819–1861), the beloved husband and Prince Consort of Queen Victoria. At the centre of the composition, Victoria is shown seated in black mourning dress, with a framed portrait of the deceased Prince Albert prominently displayed above her. Surrounding the central image are a series of oval portraits of Victoria and Albert’s children, creating a photographic memorial to the Royal Family following the loss of its patriarch. Beneath the central portrait appears the striking inscription: “A NATION MOURNS THE LOSS” presenting Albert’s death not merely as Queen Victoria’s profound personal bereavement, but as an event of national mourning. The upper portion incorporates a crown and royal heraldic devices, while foliage and elaborate decorative motifs surround the individual portraits, creating the appearance of a richly conceived Victorian memorial tableau. Prince Albert died on 14 December 1861 at only forty-two years of age. His death profoundly affected Victoria, who entered an extended period of mourning and continued to wear black for the remainder of her life. The image of the widowed and mourning Queen subsequently became one of the defining visual representations of the later Victorian monarchy. The piece is particularly interesting as an example of the manner in which nineteenth-century commercial photography was used to disseminate images of royal mourning and commemoration. Rather than a conventional single portrait, it presents a deliberately constructed family montage carrying a strong emotional and national message. The reverse is largely plain and bears no identified photographer’s or publisher’s backmark.
