Benjamin Disraeli as Chancellor of the Exchequer – Cover Sent to Him with Official “Chancellor of the Exchequer” Embossing and Unidentified Sender’s Signature - A Victorian cover sent to Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881) during one of his periods in office as Chancellor of the Exchequer. The front is manuscript-addressed: “The Rt. Hon. B. Disraeli Esq. M.P.” with no further street address or destination. At the lower left appears an unidentified abbreviated autograph signature. The earlier documentation accompanying the item described it as a “scrawled signature” and suggested that the sender may possibly have been a member of staff or someone associated with the Chancellor's office. However, the identity of the signer remains unknown and this suggestion cannot presently be verified. The reverse flap bears an impressive official blind-embossed device, incorporating a heraldic emblem with a crown and the wording “Chancellor of the Exchequer.” This provides the cover with a direct association with the British Chancellor of the Exchequer's office. Disraeli served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Lord Derby's three administrations — in 1852, 1858–1859, and 1866–1868. In the absence of a date on the cover, it cannot be assigned with certainty to one of these three periods. An interesting piece of Victorian political and historical ephemera, sent to Benjamin Disraeli and distinguished by the official “Chancellor of the Exchequer” embossing on the reverse and an unidentified sender's autograph signature on the front.
