Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby – British Prime Minister – Albumen CDV by J. E. Mayall, London, 1861 - Original albumen Carte-de-Visite (CDV) portrait dating to 1861 of Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby (1799–1869), one of the leading Conservative statesmen of Victorian Britain and three-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. A full-length studio portrait showing Lord Derby standing in formal dress and holding his hat. The portrait was photographed from life by the noted British photographer John Jabez Edwin Mayall (1813–1901). The reverse bears the studio imprint: “Photographed from Life by MAYALL, 224, Regent Street, London.” Carte-de-Visite portraits of the 14th Earl of Derby by Mayall are documented by the National Portrait Gallery, London, which dates the series to 1861 and records Mayall's studio at 224 Regent Street as the place of production. Lord Derby served three times as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom – 1852, 1858–1859 and 1866–1868 – and was one of the principal figures in the development of the Victorian Conservative Party. His long political partnership with Benjamin Disraeli was particularly significant; Disraeli served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Derby's governments and ultimately succeeded him as Prime Minister in 1868. An original and documented Victorian photographic portrait of an important British Prime Minister, by one of the leading portrait photographers of the period.
