Antoine Louis Barye, reclining feline
2nd half 19th century, inscribed "Barye", foundry stamp "F. Barbedienne Bronze", bronze with later brown patina, feline predator resting on a rock, observing the surroundings with an alert gaze, partially rubbed, h 12.3 cm, l 27 cm. Artist's impression: French sculptor (1796 Paris to 1875 ibid.) was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in 1818, studied sculpture and painting under François Joseph Bosio and Antoine-Jean Gros, Barye's works, mainly depicting animals, are distinguished by a depiction of nature and detail that is untypical for the time and by their energetic charisma, with which he founded a new style.
