French Industrial Maritime Clock & English Tantalus
A French Industrial maritime mantel clock, fourth quarter 19th century, the 2 1/4 inch silvered dial with Roman hours, the one-day, single train movement with platform escapement, having a 4-inch terrestrial globe inscribed "E. Bertaux" mounted to the capstan, having subsidiary aneroid barometer, compass, and thermometer dials, with boom jack and ship's anchor, all resting on a white onyx and gilt brass stepped base, stamped 48, together with an English Sheffield plate mounted oak tantalus
Dimensions:height of clock 15 1/4in; width 10 1/4in; depth 4 1/2in; height of tantalus 13in; width 15 3/4in; depth 6 1/2in.
Provenance:From a Bucks County collection.
Condition: Mantel clock: Metalwork of the mantel clock with heavy wear, toning and verdigris especially to the high points throughout. The onyx with small chips and flea bites. The capstan lacking five turned handles. The thermometer is lacking its glass tube. The globe with wear, scuffs and scratches throughout. Working condition of clocks are not guaranteed. Tantalus: Heavy wear, toning and loss of surface to the Sheffield mounts. The oak case and cut glass bottles with typical surface wear and small flea bites. The clock to the tantalus is currently locked and corroded to the locked position. With key.
