R. Moshe Sofer/ Chasam Sofer. Manuscript of novella transcribed by a Talmid
R. Tzvi Hirsch Rav of Mattersdorf. Possibly only recorded Novella!
Large14-page (24 sides) manuscript of Shiurim, mostly of the Chasam Sofer, on Seder Nezikin, handwritten by a student at his Yeshiva in Pressburg. With novella of R. Tzvi Hirsch Rav of Mattersdorf.
R. Moshe Sofer (1762-1839), was the pre-eminent rabbinical leader of his time. He was a talmid of R. Nosson Adler and R. Pinchos Horowitz (Haflo’ah). From his youth, his was renowned as an outstanding Talmid Chochom. He served as Rav in various Kehillos, most notably Mattersdorf and Pressburg and had an enormous influence on his generation and remains revered until the present day. In addition to his rabbinical duties, he also led a great Yeshiva and most of the Rabbonim of the next generation in Austria-Hungary were his talmidim. The Chasam Sofer had particularly distinguished children, including the K’sav Sofer and the Michtav Sofer and hundreds of distinguished descendants, many of whom were great Rabbonim.
R. Tzvi Hirsch Meizlish (born circa 1780), was born in Zamosc. Known as an Ilui, at a young age he was appointed as Rav of Ujhel. In 1806 when the Chasam Sofer left the rabbinate of Mattersdorf to accept the rabbinate of Pressburg, R. Tzvi Hirsch succeeded him as Rav in Mattersdorf. Unfortunately, R. Tzvi Hirsch was niftar only a short while later (circa 1810). The Chasam Sofer delivered a Hesped (Deroshos Chasam Sofer page 77) where he extols R. Tzvi greatness in Torah, referring to him as “Ish Sinai” and how he sadly became unwell and passed away young. This is to the best of our knowledge this is the only recorded Torah of R. Tzvi Hirsch.
