A German Biographic Book about the Miracle-Worker, Rabbi Yitzchak Aryeh Wormser of Michel stadt – Germany, 1906
A biographic book about the Ba'al Shem, the miracle-worker of Michelstadt, Rabbi Yitzchak Aryeh Wormser (1768-1846). Germany, 1907. By Rabbi Naftali Hertz Aharman of Michelstadt. On the leaf after the title page, an illustration of the portrait of the Ba'al Shem. Extremely rare!
The book is in German! (The language of many of his admirers – a unique phenomenon since the Hassidim of all other Rebbes spoke Yiddish!)
The book is based on historical data and on folk tales. The author himself was a native of Michelstadt and heard stories about the Ba'al Shem from his acquaintances.
Year after year, on the Yahrzeit of the Ba'al Shem of Michelstadt, thousands of Jews from all over Europe come to his grave, to pray for salvation. In recent years, there are also groups of prayers from Israel who travel there. There is a special committee in Antwerp which was established to commemorate him.
His rabbis were Rabbi Natan Adler and Rabbi Pinchas Ha'Levi Horowitz, author of "Ha'Pela'ah".
At the age of 18 he vowed to abstain from animal products; a promise he kept until his death. He was known as an ascetic and was also known for his virtues. He was a very modest person, who was loved by everyone, and who denied having supernatural powers, living a simple and modest life and welcoming anyone who came to him for a blessing.
Requests for prayers were sent to him by the Chatam Sofer and the author of "Chidushei Ha'Rim" and many saw miracles worked by him. He left two notebooks in which he wrote with precision the names of the people who had appealed to him from almost a hundred different cities!
