Nefesh Ha'Chaim (1837) – the Copy the Editor of the Book, Rabbi Ichaleh of Volozhin, had Given as a Gift to a Young Groom
Second edition of "Nefesh Ha'Chaim", the well-known book of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin (1749-1821), the leading disciple of the Vilna Gaon and the founder of the Volozhin Yeshiva.
This is the first edition of the composition as a complete book. Initially, the composition "Nefesh Ha'Chaim" was printed only as booklets. That is, each chapter of the composition was printed as a separate booklet. Only after the four chapters were published as booklets they were bound as a book.
The book before us is the first edition of "Nefesh Ha'Chaim" as a complete book. In addition, in this edition, Rabbi Chaim's son, Rabbi Yitzchak, "softened" his father's words about the Hassidim in two places in the fourth chapter.
On the title page of the copy before us, there is a handwritten inscription:
"This book Nefesh Ha'Chaim was given to me by the genius Rabbi Yitzchak Gaon Av Beit Din of Volozhin who himself attended my wedding. The wedding was on the 12th of Shevat … [Signature]".
An additional inscription: "Belomgs to the Avrech M. Yekutiel Zalman [signature] the son of rabbi Moshe [---] of Karlin".
125pp.
Condition: Very Good. Tear with no omission in one leaf. Stains on several leaves. Pages 45-52 are missing and exist, detached, from another copy, with a few moth signs.
