Rabbi Menachem Mendel Paneth, Av Beit Din of Desh (1818-1885), son of the Rebbe author of Mar'eh Yechezkel. He was considered to a large extent the first Rebbe of Desh. In 1837, he studied at the Pressburg Yeshiva of the Chatam Sofer and was the only student there who, on Sabbath, wore Chassidic silk attire!
His teacher, the Chatam Sofer, was very fond of him and used to walk in conversation with him every Friday [he used to call him "Der Goldener" = the golden one].
He achieved great renown for his holiness. It is told that during the time he studied at the Pressburg Yeshiva, he merited a revelation of Eliyahu Ha'Navi, who greeted him in the Beit Midrash disguised as a pauper.
Since 1842 he served as Rabbi of Urisor, since 1858 as the Rabbi of Desh, and in 1855 was appointed Chief Rabbi of Transylvania. He authored the well-known books Ma'aglei Tzeddek on the Torah and the Avnei Tzeddek, Sha'arei Tzeddek and Mishpat Tzedkek series of responsa.
Rabbi Yechezkel Yitzchak Isaac Panet-Nissel, son of Rabbi Shabtai Nissel, author of Mevaser Tov, who was the son-in-law of the Rebbe of Desh and is mentioned in the preface to Mevaser Tov (Klausenburg, 1915): "… was born ten years after our marriage due to the prayers of the holy Rebbe of Sanz".
