Arjegyzek. Fabrik fuer Ausstattungsartikel zur vollstandigen Einrichtung von israelitischen Cultusgemeinden, heiligen Vereinen und Tempeln. Hohenberg Ferencz, Budapest.

Jewish Funereal Trade Catalogue. Text in Hungarian and German. Illustrated throughout. Accompanied by: Three illustrations on wax paper of available hearses. pp. 24, Original pictorial wrappers, image of the Hohenberg Ferenz department store on rear cover. 8vo.

Budapest, Fovarosi, July 1, 1899.

Ever since Rabban Gamliel’s famous edict, Jews have been buried in the same simple white shrouds so as to promote a sense of equality between the classes. However, this sentiment did not extend to other aspects of funereal preparation, as this trade catalogue amply demonstrates. Ranging from ceremonial dress, to decorative torches, to memorial Ark curtains, to hearses, the catalogue contains various models of available equipment (with pricing) so that loved ones might give their deceased the most suitable burial.

An interesting glimpse into a lesser-noted aspect of Jewish bourgeois lifestyle in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
