TEITZ (RABINOWITZ), PINCHAS MORDECHAI. Oorah! A Ruf tzu der Americaner Ortadoksi. [“Wake Up! A Call to American Orthodoxy.”]

Text in Yiddish. pp. (16). Light stains. Original printed wrappers. 8vo.

New York, Shulsinger Brothers, 1936.

At the time of this publication, R. Teitz had been in America for only three years. European Jewry was thriving beyond measure and America was still a peripheral ‘desert of Torah.’ Outlining a vision for an American Orthodox renaissance, it is perhaps in this very pamphlet that the first sparks of R. Teitz’s far-reaching vision can be seen. While his ambition and commitment are made clear, none would guess at this early stage just what a remarkable impact this 28-year-old rabbi would make on American Jewry at large.

Born in Latvia and exposed to many of the greatest Torah minds of Europe before his arrival in America, R. Pinchas Mordechai Teitz (1908-95) was appointed the successor Rabbi to R. Elazar Mayer Preil of Elizabeth, New Jersey, whose daughter Teitz married. Pioneering a form of ‘first-rate’ Orthodoxy that worked in America, he made significant contributions to America’s developing religious infrastructure.
