Manuscript, Lev HaYirah – Joint Work of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky and His Chavruta Rabbi Berel Weintraub - Manuscript, Lev HaYirah – commentaries and sources on Sefer HaYirah by Rabbeinu Yonah. [Bnei Brak?, ca. 1950s]. Notebook containing a joint work authored by R. Chaim Kanievsky and his friend R. Berel (Lipa Dov) Weintraub. The first page is in R. Chaim Kanievsky's neat handwriting, while the other pages are handwritten by R. Berel Weintraub. R. Chaim Kanievsky (1928-2022), leading Torah authority of the present generation. Born in Pinsk to his father, R. Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky, known as the Steipler, then a lecturer in the Novardok yeshiva in Pinsk headed by R. Shmuel Weintraub. His friend, R. Lipa Dov (Berel) Weintraub (1927-2012), born to R. Shmuel Weintraub, a dean of the Novardok yeshiva (1894-1942). R. Berel was a faithful companion and Chavruta (study partner) of R. Chaim Kanievsky for over seventy years. They studied together in the Tiferet Tzion yeshiva in Bnei Brak and the Lomza yeshiva in Petach Tikva. They both married in late 1951, and shortly thereafter began to study together in the Chazon Ish kollel in Bnei Brak for some sixty years. They also lived in the Chazon Ish neighborhood. From youth to old age they studied and discussed Torah daily, authored works together (starting from a collection of novellae at the ages of 13-14 and ending with books they worked on jointly over their lives), as well as publication of Torah books (R. Berel oversaw the Talmud Yerushalmi edition published by Machon Mutzal MeEsh and other Torah projects). The eternal Chavruta of the two Torah giants studying among the younger men was a familiar sight to many at the Chazon Ish kollel (at the bottom floor at the table near the back balcony entrance). As Shabbat was ending, the two could be seen walking down Nehemya Street, discussing Torah until the time of the Maariv prayer at the Chazon Ish-Lederman Beit Midrash. The present manuscript is one of their joint works, locating sources and adding notes to the words of the Rishonim, based on an all-encompassing mastery of Talmudic and Rabbinic literature. To the best of our knowledge, the present work has not been published. Some of R. Chaim Kanievsky's notes on Sefer HaYirah have been printed in a letter he wrote, printed as an appendix to Mekor HaYirah by R. Binyamin Yehoshua Zilber, beginning with the fourth (1969) edition.
