The report summarizes a request made by Jewish supply contractor Alexander Lazarus Österreicher to the Austrian military, and his request to approve urgent repairs to military storehouses of horse feed in the Leopoldstadt quarter of Vienna and Stockerau. After examining the request, the War Council recommends performing the necessary repairs at state expense. The professional recommendation was submitted for approval to the Empress, signed by field marshal Leopold Joseph Graf von Daun (1705-1766), one of Austria's leading military strategists in the Seven Years' War and president of the Imperial War Council. At the foot of the third page, Maria Theresa records her approval, followed by her original signature: ”Maria Theresia”, authenticated by the signature of court chancellor Johann Graf Chotek (1704-1787). Alexander Lazarus Österreicher (1720-1770) was a leading Jewish war supplier in 18th-century Vienna, son-in-law of Samuel Emanuel Oppenheimer of Vienna. His trade networks and finances made him a key figure in the Habsburgs' war economy. Towards the end of the Seven Years' War, in 1761-1762, he and his brother-in-law, court supplier Adam Samuel Oppenheimer, provided major military storehouses in Austria and Moravia with huge quantities of oats. Despite the many restrictions and harsh attitude Maria Theresa showed Austria's Jews, the Habsburgs were dependent on experienced Jewish entrepreneurs and suppliers like Österreicher. Upon Österreicher's death in Vienna in 1770, government records showed the Empire's army was over 17,000 florins in debt to his estate, a huge sum, demonstrating the immense extent of his ventures and contributions to the war effort.
