Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach (1925-1994)
Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, a singer, player and Jewish American Hassidic composer, a spiritual teacher and story-teller. Rabbi Carlebach, known as the "Dancing Rabbi" was the messenger and founder of a musical genre named after him and was considered as one of the leading Hassidic singers in the 20th cent. Carlebach, an exciting singer and rabbi, who succeeded in filling up halls with followers, was a charismatic and admirable leader who represented a way of life based on love and closeness, honesty and simplicity, penetrating hearts and loving all Jews whoever they were. His singing, belief and life manners were based on these principles. Like other contemporary artists he played the guitar and grew long hair. Embracing and kissing was an inseparable part of his personality. Carlebach left a rich spiritual and musical legacy and his music is played in many synagogues to the present day. He did not gain much respect during his life and was even a subject of dispute: the orthodox did not consider him as a rabbinical character even though his songs penetrated into this public. His extrovert personality made religious people feel uncomfortable – the long hair, the guitar, the physical touch all of these were unpleasant for religious people. However, exactly those traits attraced and excited parts of the young generation and made them admire Carlebach, follow his beliefs and attend his performances. Amongst his admirers are people from all sections of Israeli society and even many non-Jews. His memory is perpetuated in numerous fashions.
