Pewter Passover Seder Plate – Germany, 18th Century
Passover Seder plate, manufactured by Joseph Zamponi. Koblenz, Germany, 18th century.
Cast engraved pewter. Stamped: "Zamponi Joseph In Coblenz" (three times on the back). In the center of the plate, engraved inside an eight-pointed star is an imaginative illustration of a lamb on an altar with the inscription "Passover sacrifice" surrounded by various ornamentations of floral and geometric patterns. Engraved on the edges of the plate are the 14 "simanim" of the Seder, illustrations of matzah, bitter herbs and a shank-bone with a dedication "Belongs to Officer C.H. Leib and his wife Ms. Hinka in the year 17—".
We do not know any details of a manufacturer of pewter vessels named Joseph Zamponi of Koblenz, but in the catalogue Zinnmarken aus aller Welt by Dagmar Stará (published by Battenberg, Augsburg, 1992; no. 578), a pewter manufacturer by the name of Joseph Andreas Zamponi II is mentioned. He lived between the years 1792-1837 and perhaps he is the son of Zamponi (the First). This assumption also agrees with the dedication dated 1740, since even if the exact year is unclear, probably the dish was manufactured and engraved in the second half of the 18th century. Some of the engraved Hebrew words have mistakes.
