A Jewish Woman in Algiers – Eugène Delacroix – Engraving
Juive D'Alger [Algerian Jews]. An Algerian Jewess with a maid by her, engraving by Eugène Delacroix. Printed by Delatre. Published by A. Cadart et Luquet, Paris, [1833].
Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863), French painter, visited North Africa as member of a diplomatic expedition and visited Morocco and Algiers. The interpreter for the expedition was a Jew by the name of Avraham Ben-Shimol who introduced his family to Delacroix. This journey had a serious impact on Delacroix who painted many North-African portraits, among them portraits of Jewish women after the figure of Ben-Shimol's wife.
