"Counting the Jews of Eretz Israel", 1918-1919
"Counting the Jews of Eretz Israel", two booklets. Booklet A: Yehuda, Booklet B: Shomron and Galilee. Published by the Eretz Israel Office of the Zionist Organization. S Shoshani and A Eitan Printing Press Jaffa, 1918-1919.
First official census of the Jewish settlement in Eretz Israel, carried out at the time of the end of the Ottoman rule and the beginning of the British Mandate. From the introduction by Dr Ya’akov Tahon: “This work by Mr Meir Wilenski, a member of our office, is the first attempt to record the statistics of Eretz Israel. Until now there was no statistical research. All was based on rumor and assessment. No material was found in the Turkish Government archives. Only the new Israeli settlements would gather data from time to time but it was not published. The present material was gathered during years when the settlement was in decline, years of calamity and war. Thousands of Jews were exiled from our land, thousands of Jews died of starvation and various illnesses. These numbers are only an expression of the remnant that survived.”
