Mishnayot with Tiferet Yisrael – Berlin, 1862 – Glosses by Rabbi Chaim Michel Michlin
Mishnayot, Seder Mo’ed and Seder Nashim [two volumes], with commentary Rabbi Ovadia of Bartenura, and commentary Tiferet Yisrael. Berlin, [1862].
Second edition of Tiferet Yisrael commentary, with additions from son of author, Rabbi Baruch Yitzchak Lifshitz. [Some copies of this edition contain an additional title page by the publisher from Warsaw, with detail of year 1863].
Both volumes contain signatures Rabbi “Chaim Michel Michlin” and dozens of glosses in his handwriting (most of which are signed with his initials “C. M. M.”). Comments and commentaries in his original style, including comparisons to the Arabic language etc. In one instance he presents a Gematria [assignation of numeric values to Hebrew letters] which he heard from Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld and sayings in the name of his mentor, the Ga’on Rabbi Moshe Nechemia Kahanov.
Rabbi Chaim Michel Michlin (1867-1939), Torah scholar among famous community activists and founders of Jerusalem; served as secretary of Etz Chaim Yeshiva and Bikur Cholim Hospital for an extended period of time, and was personal secretary of rabbis of Jerusalem – Rabbi Moshe Nechemia Kahanov and Rabbi Shmuel Salant. In 1893 a rift developed between him and rabbis of the Ashkenazi sect and he was dismissed from his positions, together with his father-in-law Rabbi Michel HaKohen; he was then appointed as secretary of Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Ya’akov Shual Elyashar, as member and manager of Committee of Sephardic Jews and as chief secretary of Misgav LaDach Hospital.
