Ein Yisrael / Beit Yisrael – Venice, 1625 – Signatures and Glosses by Rabbi Chaim Sagari and his Family
Ein Yisrael – Vol. 1, and Beit Yisrael – Vol. 2. Rabbi Ya'akov Ebn Chaviv. Two volumes. Venice, 1625.
The book Ein Ya'akov by Rabbi Ya'akov Ebn Chaviv, was burned at the burning of the Talmud in Italy (in 1653-1654). After efforts, the Jews were permitted to print the book but with its name changed to Ein Yisrael. The first volume on Tractates Berachot-Chagiga was called Ein Yisrael, and the second volume on Tractates Yevamot-Ukzin was called Beit Yisrael.
On the first volume are signatures of members of the Sigari family: "I Chaim Sigari bought it in Livorno on the 28th of Adar 1667", "This book is mine Ya'akov Sigari ben --- Eliezer Sigari", "David Binyamin Sigari". Many handwritten comments in the handwriting of Rabbi Chaim Sigari who bought the book in 1667.
Rabbi Chaim Sigari (Otzar HaRabbanim 6088), a leading rabbi in Italy. Rabbi of Vercelli. Father of a dynasty of rabbis and bankers. In 1666, Rabbi Chaim was sent at the head of a delegation of rabbis from Italy, to inquire about the conduct of the false Messiah Shabtai Zvi (Girondi, History of Jewish Leaders in Italy, page 107). According to the opinion of Shulvas (Rome and Jerusalem p. 120), at that time Rabbi Chaim was still one of Shabtai Zvi's admirers. Margin cutting damaged some of the comments, but most of the comments are complete.
Vol. 1: 195 leaves. Vol. 2: 190 leaves (index leaves at end are missing). 28 cm. Good condition, stains, wear to edges of several leaves, minor moth marks, professional restoration of title pages. Handsome new bindings.
