Large Illustrated Ketubah – Isfahan, Persia, 1920
Ketubah recording the marriage of the groom Rachamim ben Shmuel with the bride Sarah bat Yitzchak. Isfahan, Persia, Sivan 1920.
Ink and paint on paper.
Adorned with colored illustrations characteristic of Persian Ketubot: lions, birds, cypresses, the sun and flowers. With two Stars of David and an illustration of Shiviti with menorahs with texts (LaM'natzeach, Ana B'Choach, etc.) and the name of tzaddikim: Eliyahu HaNavi, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, Rabbi Meir Ba'al HaNess and Shmuel the prophet.
The motif of the lion with half a sun in the shape of a human face is one of the national symbols of Persia and it appears on many ketubot from that area. The Isfahan community was one of the largest and oldest Jewish communities in Persia.
Especially large, approximately 66X69 cm. in a frame. Spotting and wear, not examined out of the frame.
