Large "Mizrah" with Illustrations of the Holy Places -Vienna-Budapest
A large, colorful, "Mizrah", created by Shaul Ben Pinchas Hornstein. Published by Josef Schlesinger, Vienna. Printed by Lengyel Lipot, Budapest, [early 20th century, after a "Mizrah" printed in Vienna in 1889].
The "Mizrah" portrays various sites, graves and towns in Eretz Israel: At the top - tombs of Davidic Kings and the tomb of Rabbi Meir Ba’al HaNess; in the center, a large image of the Western Wall and houses of Jerusalem below which appear sites on the Mediterranean seashore ("Yam HaGadol"): Jaffa, the tomb of Elisha the Prophet on Mount Carmel, Haifa and Sidon; Along the right margins appear images of the tomb of Yossef HaTzadik, Cave of the Patriarchs, Rachel’s Tomb, tomb of Shamai HaZaken and the tombs of the Rambam and Hashla; along the left margins appear images of the tomb of Rabbi Yochanan HaSandlar, tomb of Hoshe’a the Prophet, tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, tomb of Shmuel the Prophet and the site of "Tiberias Hot Springs". The depictions of sites in Jerusalem are based on the prototype drawn by R. Yehossef Schwartz in 1837.
Rabbi Shaul Hornstein – author of "Givat Shaul" (Vienna 1883), a book about the geography and history of Eretz Israel and the holy sites from biblical times to modern times.
