Letter by a Jewish Merchant - London, 1693
Letter by a Portuguese Jew by the name of João Carção to his friend Pedro Pereyra. London, 1693. Portuguese.
Letter concerning finance and business. At the beginning of the letter, João Carção writes that he is now in London and he remembers past times. He cites morals and words of King Solomon (from Kohelet and Shir HaShirim). The letter has not been thoroughly examined.
On verso are handwritten calculations.
This is an early testimony of the visit of a Portuguese Jew (apparently from Holland) to London in the second half of the 17th century, not long after Jews were permitted to return and settle in England.
[1] leaf, 23.5 cm. Fair condition. Folding marks, wear and tears. Ink erosion, affecting text.
