Letter of recommendation, handwritten and signed by R. Avraham Duber Kahane Shapira, author of D'var Avraham, Rabbi of Kovno, "To my esteemed friend… R. Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook, Head of the Rabbis in the Holy Land". Letter of recommendation to assist a family immigrating to Eretz Israel. Kovno, 1935.
Written on the verso of a letter requesting help for a family planning to immigrate to Eretz Israel, by community activists from the city of Tauragė, Lithuania.
R. Avraham Duber Kahane Shapira (1871-1943), author of D'var Avraham, an eminent rabbi in his times, son of R. Zalman Sender Kahane Shapira and son-in-law of "The Gadol of Minsk", R. Yerucham Yehuda Leib Perlman. Studied at the Volozhin Yeshiva. His scholarly book D'var Avraham, the first part of which was first printed in 1906 earned him fame and already in his times, leading rabbis discussed its content. He was renowned as a prominent leader of Lithuanian Jewry. In 1924, he joined the famous rabbis’ journey to America together with the Kli Chemda, R. Kook and R. Epstein. The outbreak of WWII caught him on a visit to Switzerland but he returned to Kovno saying that a captain does not abandon his ship during a storm. He died in the Kovno Ghetto and thousands of Jews attended his funeral.
