Silver Medal with Hebrew Legend - Breslau, 1700
Silver medal. [Breslau (Wroclaw), 1700].
Obverse: view of Breslau with the Hebrew legend "In the shadow of the Lord" surrounded by clouds. Underneath appears the Latin legend "seMper Defensa beLLo et paCe" [always protected during war and peace]. The large letters spell the year - 1700 - in Roman numerals (MDCLL). Reverse: an altar with the coat of arms of Breslau with a pair of hearts above, surrounded by the Latin legend "a Meo Com CorDes". Above the hearts appear the Hebrew words "God is our shield" in an oval border. Diameter: 51 mm.
A similar medal, (with a view of Breslau and the Hebrew words "In the shadow of the Lord"), appears in the catalog Great Jewish Portraits in Metal, edited by Daniel M. Friedenberg. New York, 1963, p. 137. The medal was struck to commemorate the entry of Fredrick II of Prussia into Breslau in 1741.
Provenance: collection of Bruno Kirschner.
